A maternity photoshoot should be an experience to enjoy. However, many are hesitant to book one because the idea of preparing for it can even be a cause for anxiety! Let’s make sure that’s not the case for you.
It is a good idea to book your session as early as possible. This will give you plenty of time to prepare.
Consider whether the shoot will be indoors or outdoors. Then, think of the outfit that would suit the location best. For indoor shoots you can think of options such as lacey robes, cosy jumpers, lingerie or a long flowy dress. For outdoors shoots I often suggest long flowy dresses as well because they add texture, movement and look quite romantic. However, dresses might not be everyone’s choice – maybe you are more of a ragged jeans and jumper kinda gal. My best advise – make sure that whatever you decide to wear, you’re comfortable in.
If your family will be joining you in the shoot, start by putting your outfit together and then think of your partner’s and the kids’. Not everyone has to be wearing the same colour, just make sure that the colours work well together and compliment each other. For my editing style I suggest natural earthy tones. Avoid neons, logos, and patterns.
On the day of the shoot pay attention to your hair and make-up. I suggest keeping it natural. If you can afford it, it might be a good idea to pamper yourself and get it all professionally done.
For me it is important that you enjoy the experience. For this reason, I have put together a client wardrobe that takes into consideration colours and textures that work well with my style. I have also tried to ensure that there is a variety of sizes to cater for everyone.
I also work with hair and makeup artists that are happy to come to the studio to get you ready before the shoot, aiming to remove all stress from the experience.
Finally, all I can say to you is do not let anxiety put you off from booking a maternity session, whether with me or someone else, make sure you document your journey. You wont regret it.
